Psychedelic Funk

Skin began when Ric Orlando (guitar, Hot Bodies) and J. Potts (drums, Miracle Legion), two friends from New Haven, moved to Boston. There, they hooked up with Rob Zammarchi (bass) and Karlo Takki (keys, trumpet, guitar), forming a group called Frogkit, then His Boy Elroy and, eventually, Skin. Less than a year after their Boston debut at Storyville, Skin added a horn section: My Hip singer Bill Murphy on trombone and Young Snakes drummer Michael Evans on alto sax and percussion. Ken Field (now with the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble) replaced Michael on alto sax in 1984. John Ferry stepped in for Bill on trombone, left to join Bim Skala Bim, and was replaced with Josh Roseman. The mighty tenor sax of Henley Douglas, Jr. became the anchor of the Skin horn section in 1986. Andrew Padua replaced Rob on bass in 1988.

Skin released the 8-song Pointless Spearhead cassette EP in 1984, the Saddle/You're the Best 12" single in 1985, the Troubled Sleep/Stand Up 7" single in 1986, a Skin-branded condom in 1987, and the Sanity LP in 1988.
